USB booting :: swap partition on USB pendrive
I have dell laptop celeron 466 mhz, 96 mo RAM. I take off the noisy hard disk and booting DSL on usb pendrive.
RAM is usually use at almost 80/100 then it freeze sometimes.
I have create 198 mo swap partition but i don't know how to use it : mkswap
You don't want to have a swap partition on your USB pen drive because it will quickly ruin the drive. I suggest buying a little more RAM so you can run toram.
yes i will have some.
i arrive to swapon :
now it run with RAM usage 67,2M/92 M (72/100) and
swap used : 45,2M/189M (23/100)
why is it dangerous ?
pendrives are made of flash ram with a limited amount of (~10000 to 100000) write accesses per unit. placing swap files on such a device is usually a very bad idea.
ok, ok !!
I was so proud of myself...
a friend will give me pc 100 ram and I will enjoy toram.
thanks
P.S: how long can I stay with swap on usb ??
