USB booting :: Boot floppy method not working

I'm trying to get DSL (2.2b) to boot from my 256mb usb stick, using the usb boot floppy as my comp at work has usb booting disabled. I used the 'install to usb script', hdd method, to put DSL on the stick.

Everything goes fine at first when searching for the distro on devices, then this message is shown:

"Accessing DSL Linux at /dev/sda1...cat: No file /KNOPPIX/etc/ld.so.cache."

After that, a few messages about files not being found, and then a final kernel panic.

So what am I doing wrong? Do I have to format/partition the stick a certain way before running the install script?

Oops, I should have said I tried it on a vmware machine. Works fine on my real comp. Any reason for this? I'd like to customize DSL a bit, and being able to test it in vmware makes things a lot easier. Of course I could just use the cd image. But does anyone know why usb booting fails on vmware 5?
