USB booting :: USB Turns Off

I installed DSL on a 1 GB SuperTalent Flash drive (as USB-Zip).  When the boot process gets to scanning USB devices, my mouse, keyboard (both USB) and SOMETIMES my USB flash drive turns off.   When the Flash Drive turns off, I am taken to a VERY limited shell and it tells me to hit the reset button. I tried a PS2 mouse and keyboard, and they won't work.  DSL works fine when booting to the CD.  Does anybody have any ideas?
I have the same problem on a Dell Optiplex GX620.

It has a USB keyboard and USB mouse.
It works fine if I boot off of CD, but if I boot off of a microdrive in a USB adapter, the microdrive turns off, the mouse turns off, and sometimes, the Keyboard turns off.

I have tried the waitusb.  No luck.
