USB booting :: Getting installed apps to stay after reboot.

I know that you can set directories to be "saved" when you reboot.

I've downloaded LXDoom, saved it, and installed it.  However, when I reboot, the icon on the desktop and the files in (going by memory here) /usr/games have gone.  The game doesn't exist.  I can re-install it from the downloaded files (and, oddly, the .cfg files are still there).

Do I have to edit the filelist to include that directory as well?  Or am I installing it wrong?  Or do I have to keep re-installing it whenever I reboot?

Same applies to other apps like openoffice.

Cheers.

You don't say what sort of install you have, but I'll assume USB as it's in the USB forum.

Saving configurations doesn't save myDSL applications. They need to be reinstalled each time you boot up. The boot process will look for DSL applications & install them automatically if found. You have to place them where they can be found.

When you do a mydsl installation, the application file (it will end .dsl or .tar.gz) will be placed in a directory on ramdisk (/ramdisk/var/tmp/ on my dsl 2.3 USB-ZIP install). You need to copy this file to your pendrive - if it's a USB-ZIP install, copy it to sda2. When you next boot up, it will be re-installed. If you have a USB-HDD install, I assume it needs to be in sda1 but maybe someone who knows can verify this.

It seems simple now, but took me a while to figure out & it's not intuitive if you're new to DSL. Many posts here assume too much knowledge of Linux!

#title DSL with mydsl, restore, persistentancy, hostname, and passwords
#kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda2 quiet vga=normal noacpi noapm noscsi frugal dma toram mydsl=hda3 restore=hda3 home=hda3 opt=hda3 host=DSL1 secure
#initrd /boot/minirt24.gz

place the .dsl file in "/" of your persistant drive. be warned tho...those .dsl's eat up a lot of ram, would recommend the .uci files if you can find them.
