USB booting :: usb boot without bios supportwh
Hi,
i want to boot from usb-stick, but my bios does not support it.
i did a dsl-hdinstall to the usb-stick, and then wanted that system the way it is described here:
http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Pivot_Root_Install
however switching to runlevel 5 fails:
syslogd: could not connect to socket /dev/log: address is already in use
this is so close to the target line ...
is your new root accidently mounted read-only?
Doing a dsl-hdinstall to a usb stick will wear it out rather quickly.
Doing a frugal type install will not.
The standard DSL boot floppy supports the option fromusb for those machines that cannot boot from usb from BIOS.
This will load the usb modules and scan for the pendrive.
Or you can also boot to usb stick by using the cdrom with the option fromhd=sda1
@~thc: following these steps:
http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Pivot_Root_Install
new root is writeable right after mounting, but after some step (don't remember exactely, i guess pivot_root) it is not writeable any longer.
@ roberts i will give the dsl boot floppies a try - i overlooked they exist
@ roberts:
booting from cdrom with fromhd=sdb1 and booting with bootfloppy-usb.img both fail.
the fromhd=sdb1 fails with: "cant find knoppix filesystem"
the bootfloppy fails with: "no file /knoppix/etc/ld.so.cache" ..... kernel panic
both times the usb-sticks led does not light up, so i guess the necessary drivers are not loaded, so there is no chance to read data from the usb stick. perhaps this happens because the usb controlles is on a pcmcia card.
when booting to runlevel 1 (boot option dsl 1) the led lights up, and the stick is mountable.
