USB booting :: What kind of install do I need to do
Hey everyone, been a casual user of linux for a while and was wanting to install DSL to my compact flash drive and show it off to some of my buddies when I am over at their house, etc.
I am using a SanDisk ImageMate II USB Device{According to Windows},its basically a compact flash drive that came with my camera, the memory itself is a 64MB LEXAR MEDIA CARD
so I dont believe it is a pendrive so to speak.
I used the embedded DSL and ran it through windows, when I went to tools to try to install it to my card I had some problems.I am not sure if I did the right install or not,I think might have to do the "Frugal" Install but I do not have a linux distro on any of my HD partitions.I am not sure if I am suppose to mount it as sda or if it is another format.
Can anyone tell me if I have to be running DSL on a hardrive or through a Linux distro in order to do this, any documentation links would be great,I just want to be able to run it off my compact flash drive when I am not using Windows
Sup dude.
Maybe you should try running the regular dsl as a livecd and from there try the Install to USB option from the menu. I'd doubt that the embedded dsl system is exactly the same as the regular dsl system, so maybe if you try doing it that way it'll work. By the regular dsl system I mean this one.

I don't run windows and never had a flash drive to install it to so I'm not totally for sure, but trying this out might be a good place to start, since when you try this option from dsl embedded it wants to install whatever current dsl filesystem is running, and might not be the right dsl system to run on a flash drive.
If it doesn't work then you might want to tell us what exactly happened when you tried to use the Install to usb pendrive option from the menu.
Ah, yeah, I just read this in the FAQ.
"Note that it is not possible to do a USB install, or any other kind of install from a DSL Embedded system."
So run the livecd of the dsl system I linked to above and you should be fine.
ok thanks so much for the help guys
