USB booting :: Boot from USB

I used the docs in the wiki here:

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/USB_Booting

I did have a problem with it booting from a USB port directly attached to the mobo (the infamous "Can't find KNOPPIX file system, sorry" error).  I resolved this by plugging the flash drive into an unpowered USB hub (keyboard).  I am going to test with a powered hub tomorrow.

Be aware that even though you may think that your school is not tracking your activities when you use a USB key, they may still be logging outbound traffic that doesn't traverse the proxy (this is a lot easier than you might think).

If you really want to protect your activities, you should look into a locally encrypting proxy or tunneling software (e.g. Tor/Privoxy/SSL tunnel/etc).  You might also want to have a chat with your parents about the school's censoring so that if you do get caught violating the school's computer TOS/TOU they understand why you did so (e.g. accessing MySpace might not be a good reason to risk getting disciplined).
