USB booting :: Problem installing DSL 1.3.1 to usb key

I booted DSL from a cd, then used the usb-hdd installer from the DSL menu. The usb key boots correctly and the logo is shown. Then it goes through the process of loading the usb modules, and then the kernel panics because programs such as cp and awk could not be found. The file KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX on the usb key will absolutely not mount no matter what I have tried. I have even tried other usb keys, but same result. So any ideas if the installation is broken? I have also tried installing it as a usb-zip but same result. I think that installation to a usb drive in DSL is completely broken. Has anyone actually gotten this to work?
Will be trying it myself this weekend.
Ill keep you posted on my progress.

I also tried feather linux. I used syslinux, then copied the feather linux files. I got the same exact message. After the usb modules were loaded (usbcore.o, etc) it couldn't find any of the vital linux utilities because KNOPPIX wasn't mounted, and gave a kernel panic. The drive is a Attache 512mb usb key, and I have had the same result on several other usb drives.
