USB booting :: How Long Does USB-HD drive Install Take?
How long does the USB-HDD install take?
Mine has been going for a while..
The install terminal stops spinning...
Also how many megabytes is required to install on to a USB-HDD? (I am ussing a USB pendrive that is 512 megs)
Also, if I have DSL installed as a USB-HDD will DSL save the files to the USB pendrive? So if I shut down I will find my files working and installed(if I choose the right download direction for my "myDSL" downloads ?
USBHDD should take around 5 minutes to install, assuming that you do not need to download the dsl iso from the Web.
The USBHDD installation is approximately 50MB in size.
DSL will automatically save any files that are located in your /home/dsl directory, or it will also backup any other files that are mentioned inside the /home/dsl/.filetool.lst
You can exclude specific files from backup by editing the exclusion list at /home/dsl/.xfiletool.lst
You can edit this file and manually add new files to the list for future backups.
You will need to press the "H" button inside emelfm to see hidden files. All files that begin with a period "." are considered to be hidden files.
How about If I am booting off a USB-ZIP installed jump drive?
I don't know.
I don't use USBZIP.
I would expect that USBZIP would take longer because the install script will write zeros out to the entire contents of the USB device while the USBHDD script only zeros out the beginning of the device.
Well it takes something like 3 minutes and it is a big test of faith as the installer script seems to pause for a while and the USB drive does not blink...
Okay I have another question....
After the install script completes, I reboot and then start X Windows through "dsl xsetup"
Sadly X Windows just shows the loading thing and then goes forever (well after 45 minutes I quit).
Why does this happen and how do I prevent it?
I have the most loved motherboard here with the Nvidia Nforce 3 chipset with: 4 usb ports on the motherboard, 2 on PCI card, and another 2 on a PCI card.
