DSL Embedded :: How to rebuild the default kernel 2.4.26?

When I rebuild 2.4.26 from kernel.org with splash patch, it can boot from IDE-CDROm but can not boot from USB-CDROM. WHY?
How to resolve the problem?
Or it does with linuxrc and kernel?
