DSL Embedded :: DSL Embedded file sharing issues and ideas

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that you guys can give me some advice or insight to my situation.

I have installed DSL on my USB drive and enabled it to USB boot and run embedded. Funny thing is a couple of laptops I work with do not support USB boot, so occasionally I'm stuck with embedded.

Ideally I would like to run DSL embedded in the same environment as when it is USB booted (access to the same extensions, etc), as well as access to the files on my USB drive. Actually the latter is especially important because I go nomad most of the time.

A couple of ideas came to mind when I did some research:

1. Mounting the USB drive to the virtual system on DSL embedded. (not sure if it's possible)
2. Using samba server to transfer file between host and virtual machine
3. Save everything on the virtual harddisk; USB boot and embedded both use this harddisk when restoring config.

I'm reluctant to go with 2 because I don't want to install samba servers on every computer I run embedded on. 3 is alright but I don't think that other OSes can access the files on the virtual hd.

Can somebody who has tried something like this offer some suggestions or alternatives? How is everyone using their embedded?

Hi,
I get confused by your explanation, but I shall try to give you some insight with hope that it could help you:

1. If you run 2 DSL USB booted off of a USB-pendrive and running: then, betaftpd is your friend in order to exchange data and vnc viewer/server in order to manipulate apps;
2. If one machine has a DSL booted off of a USB-pendrive and the other a winxp with DSL USB-embedded running on it: then, you don't need to let DSL USB run embedded on your second machine; you have to share your USB-stick on your xp machine with a xp utility (filezilla is a good one) and you can activate the xp-remote-desktop app in xp in order to get a GUI connection with your xp machine and (if you need to) to run DSL embedded remote from within xp.

good luck!
yours

Hey ZoOp,

Thanks for your quick response!

Actually I'm referring to sharing data between the host and virtual machine in DSL embedded. Since I already set up my file system on my USB for USB boot, I want to try to use it for embedded as well.
Most of the time I run embedded on Windows XP machines.

The best way to implement Samba and filesharing between the host and guest (embedded DSL) is to download LinNeighborhood (samba.dsl) and run it. You can then set it up to share drives between embedded DSL and whatever host you are running (WinXP to various Linux distros)

I have used it his way and it works well. You can even edit files on the mapped drive directly from an editor or play music that resides on the mapped drive.

Great! I'll give it a shot.
Thanks!
