DSL Embedded :: Embedded DSL on U3 flashdrive?
Hi all, I have become fascinated by portable programs and have a new U3 Sandisk flashdrive that I just updated to the new Launchpad version 1,2,0,9. What's really neat about this update is it can be setup so the Launchpad does not start when the flashdrive is inserted. It still has the two drives show up (E: and F:) when inserted in a Windows 2000 or XP box but you can now jump directly to drive F: and access files like the older non U3 drives. Here is the output from a DOS box:
Volume in drive F has no label.
Volume Serial Number is B288-271C
Directory of F:\
05/24/2006 12:43p <DIR> Documents
04/18/2006 03:33p 950,272 LaunchU3.exe
10/28/2006 03:05p <DIR> 7-ZipPortable
1 File(s) 950,272 bytes
2 Dir(s) 899,350,528 bytes free
What I'm thinking is I might be able to install Embedded DSL on this drive. It is a FAT files system now but I don't know if it is 16 or 32 will have to review some DOS commands or insert it into my Linux box to find out.
The goal would be to have a flashdrive that could run U3 programs on a XP box, run standard non U3 portable programs on XP (it does that now). Or run DSL using QEMU.
All three options on the same flashdrive, that would be neat!
Anybody tried this?
Thanks, DC
If you can run regular programs on that unrestricted partition, then I don't see why dsl-embedded wouldn't run off it - go for it!
Update, It works! Just downloaded the Embedded DSL and unzipped it to drive F: Then I double clicked on the .bat file and DSL loaded with out any problems. That is so cool! I now have U3 programs, non U3 portable programs and now DSL all available from the same SanDisk 1GB U3 Micro.
This message was posted using DSL and Dillo.
Got to run, DC
Hi DC103!
I have used my Sandisk Titanium 2 GB U3 with dsl-embedded and it works. It seems that DSL just ignores the U3 and works.
Have fun,
