DSL Ideas and Suggestions :: Where do I get a list of things to get w/ apt-get?

I'm sorry. I'm new at this. Where can I find what to type to get various programs? The new version of Firebird, etc. Thanks in advance for your help!

you can search for things
apt-cache search program_name
and it shows a list. Or get the package synaptic. It's a big apt-get frontend.
