Hardware Talk :: Bringing new life to old hardware I think ;)

Hello DSL community,

I threw together a bunch of old hardware I had laying around here is the system specs: Pentium 1 MMX 200Mhz 64 megs of EDO ram intel atx motherboard generic pci 10/100 nick Dlink DWL-520+ B wireless pci card 48 times cd rom drive.

My last issue is the hard drive is it better to run a regular hard disk for this system or would it be a better call to go the ide to compact flash route I'm considering the CF route as I have an extra 512 CF card on my desk. Any help or advise provide would be much appreciated.

I would recommend since you have the HD just play around with the different installs...for "GP" frugal HD install works great and with 64Meg of RAM it should be pretty dang sweet...the CFDISK can be used as well, and with some tweaking you could actually make the DSL frugal from the CFDISK, swap and persistant directories on the HD and kapow!

I bet that sucker would make a dang good webserver or if you even got froggy..perhaps a data server or whatever

Thanks for the reply well it's intent is to be just used as an internet browser/email station for when guests come to visit. I think it should do the job eh. BTW the hard drive I have is an old western digital 850meg LOL

The small hard drive should work OK as long as it holds up. Those old ones didn't have great longevity (some new ones don't either!) You will need a swap partition because of the low RAM, so that will put additional strain on the hard drive. I recommend tryng to find a slightly newer one.

Then yes I would recommend installing as frugal...this way if anything borks up or whatnot just reboot the machine back to a fresh version of DSL, very fast and easy to impliment
