DSL Tips and Tricks :: how to install DSL to HD thru LPT CDRM drv

Good evening guys..

ONE question..   I have here an old old laptop IBM755CX with 24MB ram / 1GB with win98 installed / external Parallel-Port CDrom drive

My question is...  which DSL do I download ?
I'm 100% sure it will not be the LIVE-CD because there is no such thing as boot-to-LPT-port (cdrom).  And i'm 100% it is not the EMBEDDED.zip because I don't want to run DSL on top of win98 (since I want to get rid of win98). The other option that i know of, is to download the 60 floppy disk version then boot off the floppy and install .. but this is super tedious !! Any other method ?

So I want to know which DSL that I can download to install within win98, and then somehow wipe out win98 and eventually have it boot to DSL on the HD.

Any idea how ?  THanks :)     I'm building this for my grandpa

Hi Logicmaster,

You could just copy the content of the live CD to the root of your C: drive and then install Grub. That's the only difficult part but you will find lots of infos about it on the forum.

This is what I did on a dual boot Ubuntu-WinXP by just adding the appropriate lines in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Quick and very easy to update !

Cheers   :)

All you need to do is copy the knoppix folder from the cd onto the drive and restart the computer with the boot floppy.

the "frugal" option will let you access the drive, I would suggest the lowram option as well.

Then you can install grub once you're sure its what you need.

Make sure that you copy all of the files to your C:\ drive and also make sure that you copy to

C:\KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX

Note the UPPERCASE letters.

oh major poop for me !!!

BAD BAD ME.. i should have read your replies first before I did what this guy said...

http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....t=10361

cuz i've somehow formatted the HD and set it up for Linux primary partition. So that means no more win98 that can access the parallel-port cdrom drive.

so that means my only option right now is to follow the above , which i'm stuck in that step !!

help help :(
