Andrew V. Newman (who shows up on the first line in a Google search) posted an excellent shell script I use all the time in Fedora Core 5. Turns out it works just as well in DSL 2.3. Requires only a small shell script (define) and a dummy file (define.txt) in your /ramdisk/home/dsl directory. Then anytime you type into an xterm './define (some word or words)' and enter, you get a very fast set of definitions, assuming you already have your network working. There is a problem here to be solved.
Although the lynx for DSL and Fedora are the same,
the lynx.cfg's are different.
Unfortunately, the cfg files are humongous.
When I discover what the significant differences are 'I shall return'

FWIW, we already have a dictionary program that uses Perl's IO:Socket to connect to dict.org.

yes..dsl includes an online dictionary..just click net dictionary and type a word and enter. easier than typeing something and then the word to look up.. if you want an offline dictionary you can apt-get install dict-gcide amoung others and type.. dict <word> ..in a terminal and do the same...however variety is said to be the spice of life : )
