DSL Tips and Tricks :: Getting Firefox-1.5.0.4.tar.gz to work

Hello guys!

Just a little tip about the latest version of Firefox. I couldn't make it work as is in DSL 3.0RC2. I then discovered that the menu item was placed in /var/tmp and that doesn't work with this version. So I just opened the firefox-1.5.0.4.tar.gz file in emelfm as root (double-clicking). Copied the /tmp dir to /home/dsl and removed the /var dir. After copying the /tmp dir back to the file and repacking I was good to go. I'm posting this from the reconstructed firefox.

Have fun,

Hi again!

Just noted that no icon for the new version of firefox shows up but it's in the myDSL menu and starts well from there.

Have fun,

hi meo,how are you?
i have downloaded the browser mozilla 1.7,the tar.gz version, and running in dsl without installations, only needed to click on the mozilla file,in the extracted directory.
some people if have 64 mb ram or less, the browsers mozilla and firefox is much weight and is needed to used dillo or links hacked.
at example windows 95 have a internet explorer 3,will run with only with 8 mb ram and have frame support.why linux not have a browser than light and with frame support?
for the trashware i use damn small linux, deli linux, and puppy linux.
bya and good days from italy. :)

Hi tuxmachine!

I'm pretty fine, thank you! I'm not worried about ram when I use DSL because I have 256 MB in this old machine. But I like things to be practical. That's why I made some change to Firefox mentioned above. I run DSL 3.0RC2 from a usb pendrive with following commands: noicons noswap. That way I can spin down my old and noisy harddisk and enjoy listening to my favourite internet radio stations while browsing. One of the reasons i posted the tip is that it might work with other extensions that use /var/tmp for the mydsl menu. So it's a quick and easy change to use extensions in a practical way. I have an optional dir on my pendrive and can load extensions through the mydsl menu. That's the way I like it. Many greetings from a warm and sunny Sweden!

I put the firefox menu item in /var/tmp/mydsl.menu because I read somewhere that that is where it goes. Anyway, I fixed that. I also created a firefox uci.

You know, meo (and everyone else), if you know of a bug, or inadequecy, or something is missing from an extension, especially one in the testing repository, it helps to post in the myDSL extension forums. I read the Testing forum regularly, and no one had any comments for firefox-1.5.0.4.tar.gz.  I would have fixed that a lot sooner if someone mentioned it over there. Here is a link:

Even if everything works just fine, and is perfect in every way, we still like feedback.

Happy Holiday from USA!
