DSL Tips and Tricks :: Windows Partition
Dear All,
I use DSL to fix my windows registry. I tried to copy some registry files but it always says "/hda1/....reg is read only". I tried to use "root" user but still can not do it. Any one can help?
Regards,
Arinuke
DSL cannot write to NTFS Partition.
Is it NTFS Partition? If yes, you may change it to FAT32 by PartitionMagic.
However, I would have to recommend you DO NOT do that. Even if a conversion from NTFS to FAT32 succeeds, you will lose important benefits of NTFS such as increased stability and file security.
If you need to write to your windows drive from Linux you might consider adding tools that are meant for the job, or trying a different distro made for that purpose.
linux-ntfs.org. You can get some drivers able to write to ntfs here. Also, I think the later versions of Knoppix can write to ntfs. Maybe Ubuntu can. Do you have the Windows Install CD? That will enable you to drop to a console and make changes. It has some real weird bugs though. I think you can only read and write to the Windows/Winnt directory.
If it's only to fix a Windows registry you could use the Trinity Rescue Kit :

Otherwise if it's for a small Linux live CD distribution that can write on NTFS there's also Slax :
