DSL Tips and Tricks :: mkmydsl and vfat partition
Making a remastered DSL CD can give you problems if you try to store the temporary /remaster files on a vfat partition. Apparently linux writes all filenames and directory names in lower case letters, but the boot CD requires that the /KNOPPIX directory and the KNOPPIX file be in upper case letters. You can get all the way through the process (though some error messages do pop up) and burn your CD -- only to have it drop you into the very limited linux shell when you try to boot with it. Your new, remastered DSL CD thus becomes a coaster.
The solution is to put your temporary remaster files in /home/dsl/remaster or in a similar directory on an ext2 partition.
