System :: What's with gcc?

What's the matter with gcc? I loaded the gcc dsl and when I try to configure a source tree I get "gcc can't create executables" -- what is it for then?
Or do I need to apt-get gcc from debian?

gcc1.dsl, I have used many many times.

How did you "load" it?
Which "user" is running it?
"Where" is this user trying to create the exe?
