Release Candidates :: DSL v4.0 alpha1

I would like to keep this topic on specifics to dsl-4a1, and in particular bugs in the new user interface.

Thanks. There are a few more things that need to be changed in .dfmext for file handling. I'll send my updated file to you in the next couple days.

This alpha is very spiffy, and I'm glad to be participating.
That said, when I tried to do a traditional install in X (the hd install), xterm closes before the install script gets to the point where it asks which bootloader you want to use. I rebooted and threw "install" at the boot prompt, and using the menu there the install proceeded with no problem  (in fact, I'm using it right now on my laptop).
When I right click in DFM, there's a circle drawn on the desktop... not sure what that's all about.
The little CPU usage meter is nice in the bottom right corner, but I think it's best left off by default. With the meter on the desktop, it's a tad redundant. Right-clicking it doesn't get rid of it, and that might frustrate newer users.
Oh, and for Firefox, it would load a bit faster if that RSS feed was pulled from the bookmarks. Just a thought.

All in all, I think the direction for DSL 4 is a good one. Besides the install issues, I could see this being quite palatable for the masses:cool:

Oh, and for reference, I'm using a Toshiba 1555CDS Notebook (380MHz, 190MB RAM)

I've done two hd installs and haven't experienced that.

That's normal behavior for dfm.

Alternatively, those who don't want it can edit out the xload line in jwmrc. I don't know if that's affected by the lowram cheatcode. Maybe it should be?

Is it just me or do the folder icons look like Windows 3.11?

I would consider this a bug in the UI ;)

Have tried the Live CD with nothing added.
These are all negative issues by the way, please bear;

Alpha4 doesn't detect my CF card in an ide slot, so i took it out.

xsetup.sh did not automatically start, probably because it was satisfied with the auto-detects.

MyDSL folder doesn't always show the new box-icons after loading an extension nor delete them after unmounting using the uci-tool. The menu entries don't auto-go-away either.

So tried the install-to Usb-Zip (my bios doesn't support usb-hdd).
The usb-pen boots but stops; Looking for CDROM in /dev/sda1.
Can't find Knoppix system.. USB device 2 (..blah blah..) is not claimed by any active driver.
I don't have this problem with 2.1b (kernel 2.4.31) which is surprising.
