HD Install :: if (pP(XP=hda1)) + (extP(DSL=hda5 + Swap=hda6))
hi All,
if (pP(XP=hda1)) + (extP(DSL=hda5 + Swap=hda6)) to give dsl the best functionallity and most flexible permissions, what is the rite fs for win to use
I keep getting 'hda1/ not found' at the bottom of the boot scripts
Code doesn't really help in asking a clear question.
Please state what exactly you are attempting to do, what you currently are doing in an attempt to accomplish your task, what *specific* error message(s) you receive....plus anything else you think might be related to your problem.
Hi Mik, thanks for your reply.
I guess i just wanted to know what is the most dsl complianmt filesystem for XP if DSL and XP are been installed on the same drive?
shud i ntfs or fat the XP partition?
tia
Neither will work....DSL will boot only on ext2 or ext3 filesystem from what I've seen so far (maybe fat16...but i don't know why anyone would want to run anything other than DOS on it), and Windows won't boot on a linux filesystem. So you're left with 2 options...either run DSL embedded inside of Windows, or create two partitions.
The second option is the most flexible, in my opinion, but if you want to be able to write to the windows drive from within DSL, the Windows partition should be fat32.
If you run embedded DSL, I don't think it matters what filesystem you use...you won't be able to mount the host partition anyway.
No matter what you do, you will never have compatable file permissions...Windows doesn't know squat about file security.
thanks again Mik ...
I've have been creating & installing xp & dsl to partitions hda1 fat for xp and hda2 ext for dsl. After installing xp & befor installing dsl I redo hda2 with cfidsk and mke2fs, then I do a s install of dsl.
after "setting up bootloader' starts I get (words to the effect)
cant write to ...proc etc.etc
cant find ...proc etc.etc
cant mount /hda1 etc.etc
cant find /hda1 etc.etc
Sorry about the non-verbatin of the errors but after many many sessions of trawling dsI, wiki and here am figuring I am doing something basically wrong.
On a hd install ndiswrapper dies probably because of the hd errors I am getting above.... ndiswrapper works fine with dsl & knoppix liveCD
Have i mentioned I am aiming at the cexy 'server' type install for the hd partitions.
