HD Install :: How is the HD install supposed to finish?

Hi, tried to do a HD install just now and got to the point where it said all the system files were copied, setting up /home...etc. Then it got to a line like "removing '/' from xxx" and the cpu usage went to 0% for about 20 minutes before I gave up and reset...to find that the installation hadn't worked.

Any help please?
