HD Install :: want to upgrade to 3.4

I have 3.3 currently on a partition, frugal install and I guess I should get 3.4 on there.  Any time I upgrade, it wipes out my current grub menu.lst on my hard drive.  Is there a way to upgrade just the knoppix directory in that partition by doing a "Copy" from the CD or other source?  I could save my menu.lst... and copy it back, which I have done in the past, but a "copy" of the directory seems an easier option.
With a frugal install you just need to replace /KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX to upgrade. You could try something along these lines:
Code Sample
# mkdir /ramdisk/image
# mount /mnt/hda3/iso/dsl-3.4.iso /ramdisk/image -t iso9660 -o loop,ro
# rm -rf /mnt/hda2/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
# cp /ramdisk/image/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX /mnt/hda2

After reboot you'll be running the new version.

If you can boot from the 3.4 CD then just re-run the Frugal Grub install script. Be sure to say no to the format partition question. By typing 'n' to the format question, results in an upgrade. Your grub menu will be left untouched. I recommend this way, as sometimes, changes occur in the other DSL specific boot files.
I was thinking about upgrading my frugal but I was thinking since I have persistant home and opt that some of the files might not work with the new version.  I usually do a backup, boot up, and restore only certain files.  I think Roberts had a list of what to keep in previous posts.

Nothing in a typical backup is involved with upgrade from 3.3  to 3.4.

If you are upgrading from a version prior to 3.3 then please read the site news for each version change.
