WOW what a good explanation !!!! I had had the very same problem with another distro before and I abandoned it because I could not fix it and I could not find the answer.

wendyXtdesk is a program that displays icons on the root window, and nothing else. The actual desktop application is Fluxbox (and jwm as an alternative in 2.x). However, since the shutdown command does not work for drakeman either from the menu or from a terminal, i would look elsewhere for a solution....possibly a hardware issue, lack of memory, or something that was broken either during or after installation.
