i have an ess1869, and i followed these instructions...YAY it works! but,....when i try to play mp3s in XMMS, it stutters and skips like all hell...even though processor usage is less than 30%

any ideaS?

I wrote to this thread too soon myself.  I, too, have skipping, after 30 seconds of streaming, even on the "LinuxShow", streaming starts skipping to a point it can't be listened to.  It's not buffering, it's like a stuck record.

I've been doing a little study myself.....
Try this...

If you can access your soundcard settings in your bios,
change your irq to 7 - it seems the yenta IDE grabs irq5 on my box
If not, try this anyway using irq=5 in place of irq=7..

" sudo su " to root...

" rmmod soundcore "
" modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330 "
" modprobe opl3 "

then exit X ( ctrl-alt-bksp ) and restart " startx "
Do you see the wmix mixer app ?

I have a GW Solo 5150 with ESS 1879 and this procedure
worked: sudo su to root,
"rmmod soundcore "
" modprobe sb io=0x240 irq=5 dma=1  mpu_io=0x330 "
" modprobe opl3 "
exit x
startx

I am so happy to see sound!  Now I wonder how I can make these settings boot up each time?  I have a live cd 8.1.1.
Thanks!
