Multimedia :: DMix with MB nVidia sound

OK, So long as there is only one mixer/OSS item in the list you should be able to control everything via DMIX. Try using umix directly to control the various channel (you haven't listed the channel names in your email). If there is a channel called vol then that will be assigned to the master volume. As for saving settings - you need to add lines to /opt/powerdown & /opt/bootlocal.sh to use umix to save & reload all the settings to a file. add the file you save the settings to to .filetool.lst & make sure the umix command to save the settings is before the backup line in powerdown.sh. This will preserve the settings through a reboot.

This probably should be added to the basic setup for DSL as it is a common question & it only requires a couple of lines of additional code.

I have all the normal channels listed with umix -q including vol.  If I set vol to 50 or 100, or whatever, using umix vol 100 or umix vol 50, there is no difference in sound level.  If I do a umix -q again, it looks like the levels are set correctly.  The only channel that seems to do anything is PCM, but the volume just has to be 1 or greater.  Perhaps I have to save like you said and reboot for the changes to take effect???

I don't really do a lot of funky audio/video things, and I can't get a graphical burner to work under DSL without trashing disks even with burnproof on.  I mostly use DSL as my default OS just because I use my home computer for web browsing and e-mail and it flies on my AMD 3000+ with 2GB of ram.  With other stuff, I either boot into Debian (HDinstall of Knoppix) or... yes... Windo... I can't finish writing that word unless it is part of a house:-)

At least I have sound now:-)

If you think a save and reboot would make a difference, let me know, but I don't see why that would work if it doesn't change under the command line directly.

everything that is output is set at 0 except for PCM which shows up as 100, and Video shows up as 100

DSL 3.01

Was the problem of "no volume control" ever solved for those of us having trouble with Intel on-board sound?

DSL 3.0.1
Intel MB, Realtek ALC861
Alsa-drivers-1.0.11.dsl
modprobe: snd-hda-intel, snd-pcm-oss, snd-mixer-oss, snd-seq-oss

- This setup yields great sound, but with NO volume control from applications.

- Only "off" (0) or "on" (>0) from the dMix Master slider, or from umix.

- Only "off" (0) or "on" (>0) from umix
