I don't know that this will help you at all... and I'm a noob with small hardware... but I have ben able to get an ESS1689 running under DSL. Mine is in a 10 year old Compaq laptop. It might be worth a try for you as well.
The key points are that you know what the BIOS settings for your card are. I was lucky, I had reset the BIOS to factory settings before trying the above and my values all lined up exactly as the thread told.
I hope this helps a little, JohnI think this worked... the volume shows up in d-mix. Now I just have to find a sound file to try... at any rate, it is at least closer to working.
