Multimedia :: Viewing Files On A CD

I thought the plugin "cdread" was only needed when your CD drive is not cable connected to your sound card.

But the included cd plugin already has an option for digital extraction.

I've just booted my USB pendrive DSL-4.2.4 for the first time since installing Xmms-cdread.dsl and, also for the first time, Knoppix lists details of my onboard Intel sound card.

Yet before the cdread download I was able to get streamed internet radio audio output from mplayer so the sound card must have been recognised earlier. Or are the two events mutually exclusive?
