And some extra information since you are dual-booting (as I am); the Linux OSS sb module may "misbehave" (play sound too fast for example) if the sound chip is first initialised by a Window$ driver. The solution is to fully power-down, before booting into Linux.now at /etc/modules.conf more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.26/modules.dep
update-modules cannot write to the modules.dep file. it comes back as a read-only.
