Networking :: File and Print Server for Win network?
Long time no post... (moved house, dead machine, rebuilt machine, crashing machine...)
Anyhoo, am trying to find out what is needed to set up a HD installed DSL to serve a Window$ network with files and print. Have a Win98 machine set up, but want to DSL it so I don't need to fix the bloody thing every time it crashes...
The office network is various Win versions going through a firewall/router (hardware), with said W98 box hanging off one port and acting as a print server (have problems with the print server built into the hardware router). So, to set the printer on the office machines you find the printer on \\ServerNew, and shared files are at, say, \\ServerNew\OfficeFiles
What do I need to install / set up to allow Win machines to access files and printer on a DSL machine, in roughly the same way they would access it if it were a Win machine? I've tried searching the forum, but couldn't find anything off hand (though I think I vaguely recall something about a setup somewhere...)
Thanks

Try downloading and installing the samba.dsl package
It is located in the myDSL repository.
It should work with DSL version 0.7 or newer.
I am not able to help you with SAMBA configuration, but a Google search with "samba help" or "samba howto" might give you some help.
Good Luck.
So Samba is all that's required? Haven't gotten around to trying out Samba yet, so I have no real idea what it does.
PS. The printer's a HP LaserJet 5N, if that makes any difference
OK, searched for "samba howto" on google, found:
http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html
Hopefully looks like setting up should be fairly straightforward. Guess I just need to find out about setting up a printer etc...
Thanks for the heads-up
the HOW-TO is at Samba How-Tos
