Networking :: DSL,Samba and Windows security

To all:
I've recently setup DSL .071 on one of my machines on home SOHO. I've discovered that if you are going to install Samba to share files and/or printers with a W2K "server" you may run into conexxion problems.

About a year ago, there was a big to-do about shutting port 445 on Windows XP/W2K boxes for security purposes. Back then, I did just that, closed that port via a reghack. SAMBA requires that port for connecting to XP/W2K boxes.

If you run smbtree from your DSL box and get a failure message of name not found, suspect that you have some how closed the port. I'm in the middle of looking back at the closing hack so I can undo it.
