Networking :: filesharing - DSL<->DSL<->XP

And - sorry  for being unclear...

Any how - I got it fixed....

Here is how....

On both linux 'boxes' (running in M$ VPC - is QUME an option here?)
- both network cards (as a setting in VPC, not linux - must be set to use the host ('real pc') network card.  This was already set - so wasn't the problem.

Both linux boxes - must have a user set - with a password...

i.e.
sudo passwd dsl   (I think this may have been my downfall...
I was attempting to log on as root - having set the password - which DOES work for ssh - but not for FTP...)

The 'linux boxes' - have the default setting of DHCP client on. (Probably after they broadcast at bootup - and find a DHCP server I'm guessing)
For my example - this was fine (My motorola SBG900 modem/gateway - is also a DHPC server)

Activate the Beta_FTP server on both machines.  (You could just do it on one machine - and use axyftp on only one machine)

Use axyftp for the transfer of the files
(enter the 'other linux box's IP address, User ID and password)

--The 'filesharing' (via FTP) can begin....  

Same procedure for the XP box - I use WS_FTP for the client software.  I haven't tested setting up XP as the server yet.

nickleplated - I think it is possible - to mount the filesystems/hardrives... but I think I need another 'patch' from M$ - FTP works fine for this - mikshaw is on the right track there... (it may be something that only works for other M$ os's?)
That is - this 'patch/upgrade' must be installed for an M$ virtual machine to 'map' the drive on the host...)  I don't think it has anything to do with DSL....

me thinks me was cornfused earlier - I was using winscp on the XP box (link in previous post)- and connecting - with the linux box running ssh -

I read about the different password/user (other than root) etc required 'somewhere'.. it may have been here

DSL saves XP Pro...
Which came in very handy this week - 'cause I had to rescue the files off a 'real' networked pc (XP - had died - was taking 30mins + to boot (2.4GHz system)..none of the 'recovery console or other M$ procedures could save this beast' ... so I loaded up DSL 2.0 ('live cd' on the XP machine) (I think 3.0 didn't show up right on the LCD screen?) --- then loaded the software (winscp) on a networked win98 machine...(this machine would not boot from my cd's to run DSL) got the data... then nuked the (XP drive... put XP and Ubuntu back on.... (Xandros had a display problem as well...) (that's another long story - I got XP installed... and 2 flavors of linux... and the linux's ran fine... the XP -- NOT....
so - I deleted the partition XP was on - recreated it - formatted - and -- would XP install -NO!  - the cd would not even start - untill I destroyed/rebuilt the Partition table again....

And... to keep rambling... I also got monkey setup as a web server (virtual again...) - that I can access from the XP box... so - these 'learning how it works' - comes in very handy when a 'real' problem (ahem.. windoze...) arises....

-- but the really 'funny' thing was when I sent myself an email - inside the linux box --- to my ISP's mail(server)... and back.. to my XP inbox    --

from what I've read - setting up a mail server is much more - complex...

To wit - it may have been faster to use the cdburner in DSL .. but I hadn't dug in deep enough to try it out (Xandros's burning worked flawlessly - I had burned a copy of Ubuntu 6.0xxx but it was a bad burn (Ubuntu verified that -- after I arrived at the clients house.... Xandros downloaded another ISO - and I simply clicked on the ISO file - and it burned to CD- slick!)
