Networking :: Another "Modem Problem" Post
Alright i have an internal PCTEL Plantinum 56k ITU V. 90 Modem
And.. on my ISP's website they only show how to set the internet up using Redhat linux 5.2+
and i have DSL.. Live CD
and im not exactly sure what COM port my modem is on... it SAYS COM3 in the modems properties (in windows) but when i try to connect (in linux) it has input/output errors
Edit: this question was horribly written oy. Here's some screenshots.

There's what it says when you connect to those ports..
s0 is the only one that says anything besides input/output error... but it says com1 has nothing installed and com3 has the modem.... But.. it says input output error
so does anyone know... do i have a winmodem or what?
Comp stats:
Windows ME (ew)
128mb ram
28gb hd
THANKS!
Modems can be frustrating in Linux just because a lot of modems are winmodems. It would be best to search the forum with the word "winmodem".
Yea, I've already looked at various FAQs and stuff.. and the only thing i can find is to download ... a driver at http://www.bestdata.com/tech/a56fwidentify.htm here....
However there is nothing to download there >_> and if i click 56k modems.. and click the modem again, it brings me back up to http://www.bestdata.com/tech/a56fwidentify.htm .....
I also got a program to tell you exactly what modem you have..
and it says:
MOdem #1:
PCI Configuration information read:
Vendor ID : 134D
Device ID : 7897
Subvendor ID : 0001
Revision ID : 402
Deduced Information:
Vendor name: Unknown
Device Name: Unknown
Subvendor name: Unknown
Modem Type: Unknown
WinXP Inbuild Support: No
I duno if that would help or not but >_<....
ALSO another thing i saw was to go into linux and run this... cnxtinstall.run
and it will tell you stuff.. i havent tried it yet i should do it right now though...
thanks
If it worked on Redhat linux 5.2+, theres a good chance it could also work on DSL.. I think. Where would that page be located?
What did you try to get to a) and b) ?
You could also try lspci -v to find out your model/chipset.
I have xp on a tower, but seem to use dsl more than xp..dsl did not like the win modem, so I got a new external serial...it is a us robotics v.92 56k..I just pluged it in and turned it on. works great.. if that helps at all.
