Networking :: Buying External Modem
OK, I grot rid of the partially functioning boot loader, Lilo, and am getting an external modem:

my question is, how do I know if it will work with DSL? I had one problem where something needed to be written to /dev and it couldn't because it was a cd.
Congratulations. You chose an appropriate modem that should work fine with DSL or any other operating system. (Serial attached, on-board controller.)
Specs support Linux
Linux Compatibile
The /dev thing pertained to a Winmodem (yuck!). Now that you have an external serial modem, you should be set. There are no instructions in the Wiki, unfortunately, but see this thread --
Setup
I'd suggest setting up the modem in Windows first, making notes (ISP's DNS Server(s), domain, account/user name, dial-up numbers). That way, you'll be sure of your hardware before doing the DSL setup and have the required config info. Go to the DSL Control Panel, click Dialup and you should be OK.
You'll probably like GRUB better than Lilo. Much better choice.
Thank you!! I figured "Linux compatible" might not work with Live CD distros, but I guess I was wrong, thank you very much, as I was just about to end up switching to another Distro.
