when i try to setup my madwifi card using dhcp and iwconfig the terminal that shows up tries to setup eth0 instead of ath0, this could be a bug in 3.2RC1. please advise.

No, it is just a default value in the GUI.

then how can i get connected? i tried from the terminal using iwconfig but when i tried dhclient ath0 and dhcpcd the cmnds were not recognized. iuse wpa encryption, is dsl setup for wpa config?

To get an IP use pump.

pump -i ath0

To use WPA you will need to apt-get it.
You will need to enable-apt.
It is in stable so you will need to update your apt/sources/list before you do an apt-get update and then
apt-get install wpasupplicant
