Networking :: browsing other computers on LAN
I'm trying to use my computer to browse and play video files on another computer on my LAN. Everything seems alright and I can browse the web. Thing is, I've never used DSL before so I don't even know how to locate the other computer or the files on it (is there anything I need to set up and how do I use the GUI to view files on another computer...how do I use the GUI to see files on my DSL computer for that matter!). It would be great if someone could tell me how to do this. I'm not even sure if it's important, but the other computer is running on windows XP.
Cheers,

It is easy to browse Windows computers with DSL. Had never done it before with DSL, but thought I would try it after seeing your post. I had installed W2k on one of my machines a week ago to keep up what feeble Windows skills I have. Just install the samba extension. Run it from the menu and it brings up Lineighborhood. It is point and click. It should automatically show the Windows machines on your network. Just mount the XP machine with the username and password you use to log onto XP. Then use your Emelfm or your favorite file manager to transfer files. *Now if you use NTFS I would not try to write to the XP machine (I use FAT32) but you can copy from it. You can also play music and video straight from your Windows machine with your favorite music player. Of course, file sharing should be enabled in Windows.
*EDIT: ^thehatsrule^ is right, NTFS or FAT32 doesn't matter since Windows will be the system doing the writing of the data it recieves over the network. Only if you are running DSL or any other linux directly on the Windows machine do you not want to write to NTFS, at least not without the proper drivers, but that is another topic.
Hey, thanks. Will give it a go.
A side note: whether the local filesystem uses what should not matter since it should be transparent to the client afaik
Hi, I'm back with more questions. I've gotten as far as locating my machines on lineighborhood...but when I select the machine and click on mount...nothing (visible) happens. I tried going into emelfm but couldn't find anything (actually instructions on how this is supposed to look would also be appreciated).
Also, in terms of playing media files; could that be done by directly opening the file in emelfm?
Thanks.
