Networking :: How do I set up a home network with 2 pc's

I have no Idea how to do this.

So just let me be specific on what I want to do

This is what I have
AMD k6 running dsl and win98 ( windows however did not detect the network card)
A dell dimension running dsl and win xp

The two computers each have a network card and are connected by one cable not running through a router or anything.

Given what I have, I want to beable to share files form both computers and ultimately share a network connection.

Since dsl is hd installed I can install software as I wish basically.

thanks

The first thing to think about is the physical connection.  Are you using a regular Cat5 cable or a crossover patch cable?

yeah, get a crossover cable, your probably using a cat5
FYI,

"CAT5" is just a term that describes the quality of construction for your network cable.  It is possible to have a CAT5 crossover cable.

If your cable has transparent plastic connectors on each end it is very easy to see if it is a normal or "straight-though" cable as opposed to a "crossover" cable.

Grab both ends of your cable and hold the two connectors up to a light so that they are side-by-side and both facing in the same direction.

There are colored wires coming out of the cable into the connector.  If the order of the colors (IE: purple, brown, orange with white stripe, etc) is EXACTLY the same for both connectors, then you own a "straight-through" cable.  Otherwise, you probably own a "crossover" cable.

You need a "crossover" cable if you want to directly connect the two computers to each other.

How would you share files between two computers in a network. One computer is dsl,and the other is WinXP. Both computers are able to access the internet, so the network works.
