Networking :: It won't dial.

Ok, I just installed dsl today because I've heard alot about linux and wanted to try it out. Well, when I first tried it I loved it, but as you know any computer with no games and not connected to the internet is kind of boring lol. All you have is paint and word processor, not my cup of tea.

I right clicked, hit net and the setup. I set up on a PAP, I put everything in right, the login and the password and the number it dials. (Dial-Up, Local ISP). Then, I went to it again and hit dial, I typed in the name of the provider and the window closed, nothing happened, no screen showing it was connecting and no dialing noise. I waited a cpl mins and click on the browser and said it couldn't access the dsl site. So I assume it's not connecting. Now I may have forgot to set something up I'm not sure, can any of you help me? I'm using the boot disk, I haven't installed dsl on my hd. Thanks.

most likely, your modem is not really a modem.

It's the accursed atrocity known as a winmodem.

you can try linmodems.org to see if you can find a driver for your specific winmodem, but you will have to compile it. Your best bet to do that is to use either the gcc1.dsl in the testing area (from live-cd and save the driver to a floppy or something) just don't install the gcc1.dsl to a hd-install, it's still in testing and may have bug issues...

Ok, I found my modem on the list at least I think I did. Now where do I get the driver? I have a BCM v.90 56k modem. It game with my gateway.Thank you.
Right now I'm still on xp, i'm using the boot disk to use dsl. I haven't installed dsl to my computer. If I download gcc1 how do I get it to the Linux, because it's to big to go on a floppy.

What you're saying is to get the driver for my modem, and then use the gcc1 to compile it? Sorry, I'm new to this and don't know much about it yet. Thanks for your help.
