Networking :: dialup problem

my modem is pctel hsp56 micromodem. I have configured ppp
but I still can't connect to the net.
It shows me this message:

Dec  1 21:43:14 box syslog.info -- MARK --

Dec  1 21:45:34 box local2.notice pppd[605]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root,
uid 0
Dec  1 21:45:34 box authpriv.notice sudo:     root : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/ramdisk/home/dsl ;
USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/tail -f /var/log/messages

Dec  1 21:45:35 box local2.err chat[606]: Can't get terminal parameters: Input/output error

Dec  1 21:45:35 box local2.err pppd[605]: Connect script failed
Dec  1 21:45:36 box local2.info pppd[605]: Exit.

what is the problem, is it modem driver?

Sorry, you don't have a real modem. It is a winmodem. Therefore you will need additional sofware drives, that really should be in the modem.

Hey, i'm using DSL on my sony vaio pcg-182 laptop and the modem won't work. Don't go and tell me it's a winmodem, because it's not, i had the modem working in freebsd 4.2 (which has no winmodem support), but i need linux so i can mount a usb device for school. it is using windows com port 2 (ttyS1) but i don't get a connect. you can reach me at cybur_netiks@Phreaker.net  put the subject as damn small linux modem. thanks.
With an attitude like that, I can see why he's unregistered.
First step.

try all of the available COM ports for your modem

/dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS2
/dev/ttyS3

I know this sounds stupid but sometimes the modems and serial ports get mapped to a different device name than is expected.
