Networking :: 3com LAN PC Card 3c589d-combo causes problems

My very first experience with DSL today showed a problem with my LAN PC card. It is a 3com 3c589d-combo, my notebook is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 480 CDT. When I boot from CD-ROM in the normal boot mode the booting process stalls after indicating what kind of CPU it is (Mobile Intel Pentium MMX 233Mhz).

If I choose failsafe boot mode it runs properly, but as this mode skips the PCMCIA detection I don´t have network access. When I try to connect the PC card after booting failsafe, it does not recognize the LAN card (not supported).

Does anybody have an idea which driver I can use (search engines did not really help) and explain how I can install this?

THX in advance!

How long did you wait when it stuck?

It might take a min or two to push thru the detection unfortunately

Ooops - maybe not long enough. I ´ll try it with more than two minutes waiting.

If not, try this boot command:

dsl vga=normal atapicd nosound noapic noacpi acpi=off noscsi noapm nousb nofirewire noagp nomce xmodule=vesa

It is basically "failsafe" but with pcmcia support allowed.

Yesterday I tried it with the latest version of Knoppix. It is NOT the LAN PC card, Knoppix runs fine and I get a network connection. Still, I will try it with your recommendation for DSL, because Knoppix seems to be a bit too "mighty" for my old notebook, it runs real slow with it.
Thanks!

Pete
