Networking :: MySQL will not start

I'm trying to run mysql from the binary, and I've hit a snag. Whenever I run mysqld, it exits with an error that it can't read from /usr/local/mysql/share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys. I have created a blank file there with beaver, but MySQL still won't work. I'm really stumped. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Do I need to say more?
