Networking :: Winmodems...

I've installed DSL on an old PC for a friend, but I've hit a problem.

He has a winmodem (ambient chipset) and the ScanModem utility from www.linmodems.org won't run under DSL (claims an ambiguous redirect).

If anyone can come up with a suggestion other than the proper solution of telling him to bin it and get a decent modem, I'd be obliged.

Linmodems came up with a suggested modification for Debian which I'm going to try. If it works I'll post the method here for anyone in the same situation.
