I was looking around for Linux compatible dial-up modems and I found this one...
56K V.92 Performance Pro Modem

Minimum System Requirements

   * PC with 486DX or Pentium class processor or equivalent
   * Available PCI slot
   * Analog phone line
   * Linux (Kernel 2.3 and higher), Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, XP 64 bit, Server 2003 64 bit** operating system
   * 32 MB RAM recommended (64 MB under Windows 2000; 128 MB under Windows XP)

would this modem definately work with DSL?

Try the Stratitec V.92 PCI Controllerless modem.  I got a couple at Walmart for less than $30.  The package says they are for Linux Kernel 2.4 or later.  It has the Agere chipset, which is recognized by DSL 2.0RC1 as a Lucent Winmodem at boot.  Set your modem com port as /dev/modem.
