Laptops :: can't mount hds on Inspiron 8500

DSL newb - thanks for any help in advance.

I have a user that hosed his machine so I'm booting to DSL to copy his hard drives to the network, but I can't get them mounted to do so.  He has an extra hard drive that fits into the CD bay, so I'm running from a USB drive.   Whenever I try to mount I get "mount: special device hda1 does not exist"

How can I figure out the device name so I know what to boot?  Specifically, I need the device name of the extra drive.

Thanks.

Wow - how about I use the nice mount toolbar right there on the side of the screen.  Doesn't explain why it wouldn't work via the command line, but whatever.

Well, that worked great for copying the stuff to the network, but now I need to format the drive, but it's only mounted as ro, of course.  Sooo... how can I mount it as rw?

Please? :)
