Laptops :: sound help

hi all im new here and i need help. now i first searched the wiki and forums but i cant find a way to fix my sound problem on this old compaq presario 1235 laptop. whenever i try to play a cd or mp3 on this laptop i have no sound whatsoever  so i was wondering if someone could help me out and try to help me solve this problem  i am running DSL 2.1-b any and all help will be appreciated.
I have a compaq presario 1245 laptop and I do not get any sound either.  How did you get the display to work? I only get a very faint green and white stripped screen?

My Hardware:
Compaq 1245, AMD K6-3D 333mhz, 160mb ram, 10gig hd, Neo Magic 128XD, Sound-ES1869, OS-WinXP on HD, Computer boots DSL from CD.

I have a Compaq Presario 1260 running DSL v 2.2b.

I'm not sure that that model is relevantly the same as either a 1235 or 1245.

I was able to get recently at the Hewlett Packard site product specifications for my model. They told me I have "Aureal A3D™ Interactive 360 o Positional Sound". That seems to be a reference to a particular sound card.

If you have that card too, then I assume that you could enable sound like I did today, by issuing the command: sudo modprobe sb irq=5. When it worked, I added it to the bootlocal.sh file and all seemed well on rebooting.

Whether I've got the best sound I can get, I can't say, but I played a couple of mp3s, just to try it out, and they didn't sound too bad.
