Laptops :: IBM Thinkpad 310 ED

Hello!
I have an IBM Thinkpad 310 ED, 2 gig HD, 32 MB mem, running frugal install of DSL 2.3 with DSL image on hda1 and restore/mydsl on hda5.

My problem seems to be configuring sound (sorry, don't know how to copy dmesg as I'm a NOOB)

In reading dmesg it shows
Sound Board unknown
ad1848
cs4248 "OPL3-SA2" WASS at io 0xe80 irq5 dma 1,3

NOTE: Tried enabling apt-get - that was a no go as it gave all kinds of erros regarding dsl-dpkg.dsl.   I think I probably don't have enough RAM for it to do its thing.  So, am unable to download sndconfig.

I have been able to download Opera.uci and xmahjong.uci, as well as wmdrawer (which only shows ???), but on dial-up this is painfully slow.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I'm very pleased that I can get on-line with Opera and surf and check e-mail, and the desktop looks pretty decent.  Sound would be a great bonus.

Hello!

I have  more info to add - I found by Thinkpad User Guide.  I just don't know how to put this all together.

Audio Controller Device (Sound Blaster)

IRQ:  5, 7, 9 10 or 11
I/O Address (Hex): 0220-022For 0240-024F
Memory Addres (Hex):  None
DMA Channel:  0, 1 or 3

There is also an entry thus:

Audio Controller Device (Windows Sound System)
IRQ:  None
I/O Address:  0530-0537 or 0E80-0E87
Memory Address:  None
DMA Channel:  None

*Bold applied as noted in Thinkpad Users Guide

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks for everyone's help - I really appreciate it!

If you have a sound blaster then try this:

$ sudo modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1

Roberts,
Thanks so much for your reply - I appreciate the help.  Unfortunately, I got "Failed - no such device"

I looked in dmesg and it showed:
io=0xe80 irq=5 dma=1

io=0xe80 is listed in my Users Manual as Audio Controller Device (Windows Sound System)

io=0xe80 is also assocatiated with OPL-3 SA2 WSS

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Nothing about sound blaster.

Sorry to hear that it is not a Sound Blaster.
You now have two strikes against you.
First, it is a Windows Sound Card?
Second you only have 32MB memory.

There is alsadebs in the repository.
I am not sure it would support your sound card.
And with only 32MB of ram I don't think it will work.

Maybe someone else has a similar system and can chime in.
