Laptops :: Root Console / Kernal window too LARGE

I have an HP Omnibook 2000 laptop.  I was successfully able to get DSL installed to the HDD.   Using the vesa choice I was able to set the display to 800x600 while running X.

Everything works great except the "root console" where the Kernal loads.  It is still set to 1024x768.  Which is more than my screen can display.  Most of the time this is not a problem, however anytime that I kill X the command prompt is located several lines below the bottom of the screen.

If I type a command at this prompt I can't see what I type.  But if i press enter several times the command finally displays at the bottom of the visable area as the lines scroll up.

How do I make the "root console" display at 800x600?

Thanks,

You can get 640x480 by putting (or replacing) 'vga=normal' (without quotes) in /etc/lilo.conf and then running lilo from the command line. I think there is a way to get 800x600 as well, but I don't know how ...
>boot: knoppix vga=789
800x600 framebuffer

>boot: knoppix vga=1
standard 80x25 line-text

Thanks for the help.  I really appreciate it.  I give it a try later tonight.

Editing /etc/lilo.conf with the line 'vga=normal' works perfectly.  Thanks again for the help!.  This is just one of the many reasons that make Linux great.
