Laptops :: Anyone ever get a Dell X1 to boot dsl?
Trying to boot dsl on a Dell X1. I burned a CD and used that to make a USB boot drive. The CD works fine on my desktop; can't test the USB because the desktop can't boot from a USB.
I can run dsl with qemu on the x1, but it's incredibly slow (type 15 characters, wait 30 seconds for them to appear; it really is that slow).
If I boot using the CD or USB with vga=normal, I can see the error messages--otherwise, a blank screen is all i get.
The error message begins with "Oops:0000" and ends with "kernel panic, tried to kill init;" this error can be avoided by booting with acpi=off.
But then i get the "can't find knoppix filesystem" error and the ultra-limited shell that others have posted about. The messages flash by too fast for me to catch, but it seems to be looking for it in a series of locations. I tried to tell it where knoppix was, but I get the same error (though I may be getting somewhat different messages--they're just too fast).
I've updated the bios. I've tried booting with failsafe, expert, xsetup. Tried independently ruling out all the other hardware components, waitusb...even tried things that don't make any sense like the framebuffer and turning on the dma accelerator
My surfing around led me to others who had tried booting on an X1, and they had the same symptoms as mine. But they all gave up in the end.
It's not the end of the world, but it would be nice if I could run it on the X1. So, if anyone's gotten it to work, please post!
