Laptops :: DSL doesn't see PCMIA Ethernet Card

got a question about network cards and DSL.  i have a Xircom standard 10/100 Ethernet Notebook Card in an old laptop that i wish to put DSL on.  however, i wanna be sure i can access the web using DSL in the future.  right now i'm booting off a live CD. when linux is booting, it sounds 2 beeps and notes there is in fact an ethernet card.  my question is how do i connect to the internet?  i have an ethernet cable connected to a modem, which is connected to a cable outlet.  will DSL let me do that, or do i need something more propietary.  the lights are red on the ethernet card, by the way, and the modem indicates there is pc activivity on the other end.  I used Net configuration from the main menu and clicked cardconfig or whatever, and when asked for DHCP said yes and no (two diff times) but still no connection.

any ideas,? matt.
